There are several possibilities
why your dog may have blood in urine.

In any case, you must always seek advice from
the vet as soon as symptoms appear.

Bleeding symptoms can be painful for your dog
and it requires close supervision.

Bloody urine can be a life threatning problem so do not delay the visit to the vet.

It is helpful to take a small fresh urine sample when visiting the vet as it can save time in diagnosing the problem.

Here are the main causes for bleeding to show in dog urine:

•Bladder stones
Symptoms:
Blood in dog urine
Prolonged and painful urination

These are quite common in dogs.  Possible treatment is change in diet when found early. In more serious cases, surgery may be required.
A blood test and/or X-ray carried out by the vet should determine the cause quickly.

•Estrus Cycle (female dogs only)
Symptoms:
Vaginal bleeding
Defensive of other dogs

A female dog reaches maturity at 6 months and will be on "heat".

Before the female dog allows a dog to go near her to mate, she will have her period for about 2 weeks, producing some vaginal discharge of faded colour blood.

•Kidney Infections
Symptoms:
Blood in the urine
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
frequent and prolonged urination
Increased pattern of licking genital area
Increased temperature
Change in behaviour pattern

Most kidney infections can be treated with a dose of antibiotics.
If  symptons persist, the vet may request a blood test. Also an X-ray may be required to rule out cancer or tumour growth.

•Poisons
Symptoms:
Blood in urine
Internal bleeding
Breathing difficulty
Foaming at the mouth
Muscle tremors or seizures
Lethargic or change of behaviour
Vomiting
Diarrhea

Poisoning can be caused by contact with road kill, mice, faeces, chemicals or harmful plants.

•Tick Born diseases

Blood in urine

Skin irritation
Loss of vitality
Hair loss

The best treatment for ticks and fleas is the flea drop method, usually the liquid is applied on the back of the neck, where dogs cannot lick off the medicine.  It can last between 4-8 weeks and it is painless.

Flea powder applied on fur is not as good as dog can lick it off and may find it stressful to be "pulverized" with this powder, often with a strong smell dogs dislike.

Flea spray should be banned. It is stressful for any pet.
The spray noise and strong smell does not compensate for the treatment.

Ticks should also be removed by hand immediately to stop symptoms.

•Urinary Infections
Symptoms:
Blood in the urine
frequent and prolonged urination
Increased pattern of licking genital area
Abdominal pain
Increased temperature or fever
Change in behaviour pattern

Most urinary infections can be treated with a dose of antibiotics.

•Uterine Infections (female dogs only)
Symptoms:
Blood in the urine
frequent and prolonged urination
Increased pattern of licking genital area
Increased temperature
Change in behaviour pattern
Loss of vitality

Symptoms for uterus infection are very similar to dog menstrual cycle.  However bleeding periods appear to last longer and discharge is a darker red blood colour.  If in doubt, do not wait, the Vet will take a blood test and provide adequate treatment.

In early diagnosis, a course of antibiotics will easily treat the symptoms.  However in serious cases, surgery may be required to scrape the uterus and remove infection.

Only the vet can successfully diagnose these problems, an early visit may save your dog a lot of discomfort, surgery or even save his/her life.
